The Taupo summer fly fishing season has been getting better and better every week this year. Taupo has had exceptionally long hot days that have kicked the the big dries off unseasonally early, we were watching big Browns and Bows taking Cicadas off the surface in mid Jan with some great flyfishing action.
We have just had our friends over from Belgium for their bi-annual trip to NZ and it was the best ever for them. Biggest ever Brown trout and best ever Rainbow for Frank with loads of dry fly action around Taupo and great back country fishing. This is what makes being a fly fishing guide so much fun.
We have since had some big rains hit us twice in a row and the temperature has dropped significantly, this has slowed the dry fly action right down over the last two weeks. We were out on local waters yesterday though and the Cicadas were out in force again so we hope we might be in luck and the flyfishing action will continue.
The stillwaters have been fishing the best I can remember and have been a great back up for the rivers that got blown last week. High water levels have allowed some great action over the weedbeds and the fish have been in awesome condition both Browns and Rainbows.
More rain is forecast in the Taupo region for the first few days of Feb then we have the all clear for pretty much the rest of the summer.
Bring it on !!!
