March got off to an unusually cold and wet snap this last week. Some of the lower parts of the Taupo rivers were affected by higher flows but the backcountry rivers have mainly been unaffected. Some good Cicada and Terrestrial dry fly sport is still being had in the high country and as the weather is set to improve again over the next week or so we expect the Dry fly fishing to continue on through March.
Some Big Brown trout are still entering the local rivers and at the river mouths anglers are catching good numbers of good quality Browns and Rainbows.
The lakes had some fluctuating levels to contend with this week but have responded well as the cooler water has refreshed the appetites of some good trout over the last few days. The general cooling down and higher water levels will freshen everything up over the next few weeks and with fewer anglers around its one of my favourite times of the year for fly fishing in the Taupo district.
Andrew has been out Trophy hunting this week and has had some amazing fish from our favourite Creeks, we will post his pics up very soon.
